Cardiology

Heart disease can affect dogs and cats at any age, though it’s most commonly diagnosed in senior pets. While cardiac conditions can be serious and potentially life-threatening, early detection and proper management can significantly extend your pet’s life and improve their quality of life. When detected early, certain forms of heart disease can be successfully treated.

Understanding Heart Disease in Pets

Heart disease in pets can develop from various causes:

  • Congenital heart disease: Structural abnormalities present from birth
  • Valvular disease: Deterioration or malfunction of heart valves
  • Arrhythmias: Irregular heart rhythms
  • Heartworm disease: Parasitic infection affecting the heart and lungs
  • Cardiomyopathy: Disease of the heart muscle itself

If left untreated, these conditions can progress to congestive heart failure (CHF), which occurs when the heart can no longer pump blood effectively. This causes fluid to accumulate in and around the lungs and, in some cases, in the abdomen, making breathing difficult and reducing your pet’s quality of life.

Warning Signs of Heart Disease in Pets

It’s crucial to recognize potential symptoms, especially if your pet is a senior, a breed predisposed to cardiac issues, or has a known congenital problem. Contact us if your pet exhibits:

  • Coughing, especially at night or after exercise
  • Rapid or labored breathing
  • Weakness or difficulty exercising
  • Tires easily or shows decreased stamina
  • Loss of appetite
  • Lethargy or reluctance to play
  • Fainting or collapse

Diagnostic Testing

Our team is trained to identify and diagnose a range of heart conditions using advanced diagnostic tools. Many cardiac problems can initially be detected during a routine physical exam when we listen to your pet’s heart, but additional testing is typically needed for a definitive diagnosis. We utilize:

  • CardioPet Electrocardiograms (ECG) to assess heart rhythm and screen for abnormalities, with results available in 30 minutes
  • Echocardiograms (ultrasound) to visualize heart structure and function
  • Chest radiographs (X-rays) to evaluate heart size and detect fluid
  • Blood tests to assess overall health and organ function
