Diagnostic Imaging

Our pets can’t tell us where it hurts, and they’re often remarkably good at masking signs of pain, injury, or illness. This is why fast, accurate diagnostic imaging is essential for proper veterinary care. At Winslow Park Animal Hospital, we offer advanced digital radiology (X-ray) and ultrasound imaging in-house to help us diagnose, treat, and monitor your pet’s health.

Digital Radiology (X-Rays)

Digital radiography is faster, safer, and more detailed than traditional film X-rays. Digital technology reduces radiation exposure for your pet while delivering crisper, more detailed images that are immediately available for review. These images can also be quickly shared with specialists or emergency facilities if needed. As an added benefit, digital X-rays are more environmentally friendly since there’s no film to chemically process.

X-rays are instrumental in detecting and evaluating:

  • Fractures and bone abnormalities
  • Foreign bodies (items your pet may have swallowed)
  • Tumors or masses
  • Heart and lung conditions
  • Bladder stones
  • Joint diseases like arthritis
  • Pregnancy in later stages

Ultrasound Imaging

Ultrasound produces real-time, moving images of your pet’s internal organs and structures using high-frequency sound waves. A small probe held against the skin collects returning sound wave signals to generate detailed images—all without radiation or discomfort.

We commonly use ultrasound for comprehensive evaluation of abdominal organs, including the stomach, intestines, kidneys, liver, spleen, bladder, and gallbladder. Ultrasound is particularly valuable for diagnosing intestinal foreign bodies, tumors, and organ disease. Echocardiography (ultrasound of the heart) is an essential tool in our cardiology services, providing precise information about heart valves, blood flow, chamber size, and heart contractions.

Comprehensive Diagnostic Approach

Depending on your pet’s condition, the best imaging approach may be X-rays, ultrasound, or a combination of both. We often use these technologies together to create the most complete diagnostic picture possible. In some cases—particularly for orthopedic X-rays or when pets are painful or anxious—mild sedation may be necessary to obtain high-quality images without causing stress or discomfort.
